Faithful Friday / First Time Published

Here I am in 10th Grade! Is there anyone else besides me that hates their school pics! LOL!

I was talking to Diana at her house this week about why I hated it when people cut down trees. So, I thought I'd share the story with you guys.

When I was in 10th grade, there was a pine thicket beside our house but not on our land. One day, I left and went to school as usual, but when I returned home on the bus that afternoon I was shocked! The entire pine thicket was gone. Not a tree left standing anywhere, and I was just HORRIFIED! The owners had harvested the timber from the trees and just absolute, utter barrenness was left.

Apparently, even back then, I did what I do now to relieve my emotions - I picked up my pen and paper. I wrote the poem below from my grieving heart expressing the loss of the beautiful trees that my soul had feasted on daily without even realizing it.

Some how or other (I don't remember the details now) I entered my poem into the Beta Club National Newspaper contest where they selected poems from students that they thought worthy of publication. And wonder of wonders, they published it and paid me $10. That was a really big deal 46 years ago.

I hope you enjoy it, and don't chop down those trees! LOL

What We See

I look out my window

And what do I see?

Why I see nothing

Except a few old trees.

They're dancing about in the wind,

Just look, see how they bend.

They don't mean a thing to you and me,

Why they're nothing but just old trees.

No wait, look again.

They aren't the same.

Each one's different in its way,

Each one has a certain sway.

But what purpose can they serve?

What's God's reason for them?

They're all trees

To sway in the breeze.

Just the other day some men came;

They cut down all our trees.

And then it began to rain.

The rain washed the soil away,

And when I looked out my window the next day,

Nothing was there.

The beauty was gone.

The stumps of the trees were all alone.

It's too late I know,

But now I understand.

God created the trees just like man.

Each one's different in their way,

Each one has a SPECIAL sway!
